An intensive format may be right for you if:

You want to dig into processing, but need your weekly sessions to focus on present day issues.

You have an upcoming event encouraging you to address past trauma head-on.

You prefer the convenience of teletherapy but want EMDR to at least start in person.

You already find EMDR incredibly helpful, but day-to-day issues interfere. Intensives allow time for a concentrated focus on EMDR by design, avoiding the distraction of concerns better dealt with in weekly sessions. EMDR can also make daily concerns less triggering and easier to deal with overall.

You’re seeking deeper, more concentrated healing.

You have been open to EMDR in the past and may have benefitted already, but haven’t quite processed the most salient incidents. An upcoming life event or transition has made it clear that it is time to address these more fully.

You have benefitted from teletherapy, and have wanted to address certain issues with EMDR, but it feels daunting, awkward, or less-than-ideal online. While EMDR is effective in either format, intensives can make your first experience with EMDR more accessible laying the groundwork for later work.

Perhaps you find it easier to relax in person or struggle with addressing more difficult material during a 50-minute session.  Maybe life feels too busy to feel safe with working on something so painful for a short period of time before returning to your daily responsibilities.  The intensive format encourages relaxing into the process in a deeper way for a longer period, with hours in between to rest and incorporate healing.

Healing on your timeline.

EMDR intensives can help you accomplish in one session what may take months or years of traditional weekly sessions.

What is an intensive?

Unlike traditional sessions that last 50-55 minutes and occur only once or twice a week, EMDR intensives are scheduled for 4-8 hours over the course of one or two days. These intensives allow targets to be processed in a more streamlined fashion and often can jumpstart the healing process considerably.

Session content can be prepared prior during traditional sessions to set expectations and clarify goals. In my practice, these sessions occur exclusively in person, and I offer them only once a month in Orlando, FL.

I schedule intensives for consecutive Fridays and Mondays. The details can be flexible and are discussed before booking.

EMDR intensives use the same standard EMDR protocols and allow time for adding more specific work as needed such as parts related work, installation of positive future templates, and recent event protocols when appropriate. If you are already familiar with EMDR, you will know what to generally expect and if not, we can discuss that well in advance in order to assure an intensive is right for you and you feel comfortable and confident before you arrive.

1

Pre-Intensive Assessment

We will discuss your goals for engaging in an intensive, if the process makes sense for your situation, and set expectations. We will also confirm timing, dates, length of the sessions, and address any concerns. If you have been referred to EMDR with me from a more traditional talk therapist for an intensive, we can discuss what work will need to be done prior and afterwards to ensure the best possible outcomes.

2

Intensive
Session

The best part about intensives is there is no need to rush.  Sessions will begin in ways you are already accustomed.  We will take breaks as needed and end with plenty of time to assure you leave the office as peacefully as possible.  At the end of the first day, we will plan for the second day if you are returning and discuss ways to maintain well-being until your next session, either of EMDR processing or traditional therapy.

3

Post-Intensive Follow-Up

We will schedule at least two follow up sessions to discuss progress, gains, and next steps. Some people choose to return for another intensive in a few months.  Others feel comfortable continuing EMDR via teletherapy or working on day-to-day issues now that certain targets are processed. If you are returning to a referring therapist for traditional talk therapy, I will provide a summary of our work together if requested.

What you get:

Evidence-based treatments

Preparation & customized treatment plan

Comfortable, inviting space with a therapist you trust

Continued treatment for past wounds and present concerns

Your Options

Choose the right format for you.

Intensives are offered in two formats

  • 2 day intensives occur one Friday and Monday a month.  We will meet Friday morning with a planned 4 hour session.  We can break for lunch, but many people prefer to work straight through with a few 5-10 minutes breaks throughout.   10a-2p works well for many people, but starting later is also an option.  I recommend flying in the night before it possible.

We will work on assuring a smooth transition out of session and then meet again Monday morning.  This allows processing to have some effects between Friday and Monday and gives us the opportunity to address any issues and complete or continue processing.  Due to the proximity of my FL office to Orlando, many people choose to spend the weekend relaxing knowing they are putting extra effort into their healing.
    Investment: $1600

  • One day intensives occur on either a Friday or Monday and are scheduled for 6-8 hours.  This is a more intense schedule and only recommended for individuals who are stable and have social support with them or live in the FL area.
    Investment: $1200 for current clients

FAQ’s

Other intensive questions? I’ve got answers.

  • EMDR is a methodology that allows a person to approach painful memories in a safe, calm, non-linear manner while reducing painful reactivity. Studies have shown memories processed with EMDR can move from activating the emotional centers of the brain to the memory centers, where they should be stored, causing less pain and distress. It is often combined with “ego-state” work to provide powerful tools to work on releasing the intensity and pain attached to a memory and shifting unhelpful (and often untrue) beliefs about oneself that have gotten stuck due to the pain of the past.

  • Intensives are focused on trauma treatment using EMDR in a concentrated format.  Traditional therapy sessions occur only once or twice a week and for less than an hour requiring a lot of starting and stopping of the process.  Intensives allow for the process to proceed with fewer interruptions. The format also reduces the interference of daily problems that often take up a good deal of processing time in session.

  • We will discuss the process in detail, address concerns, assess readiness, and openly discuss if the format is likely to help you in the ways you hope.

  • Intensives focus on treating both “little t” and “big T” traumas that EMDR has been proven effective at addressing effectively in so many clients.  Intensive EMDR sessions can be focused on both acute, intense traumatic incidents and chronic, painful injuries that lasted for years causing traumatic reactivity.

  • Most of the preparation will happen in therapy sessions prior to meeting for the intensive.  EMDR is a process that is best contained within the session.  You can prepare for your intensive by getting a good night’s rest, even if you can’t sleep, eating well the day before, bringing some snacks and any comfort items that you would normally want during EMDR such as a fidget spinner, you favorite tea, or slippers for the office.

  • Insurance will cover sessions prior to the intensive if it already covers your therapy appointments with me.  I provide superbills for you to submit to your insurance for intensives, but it will likely only cover a portion of the expense.  This can also be discussed in sessions prior to committing.

  • I require 48 hours prior the start of the intensive to avoid a cancellation charge.   Cancellation charges are $200 with less than 48 hour notice.  Emergencies are evaluated on an individual case basis.
